Shopify CSV: blank columns versus omitted columns
An update file can look almost identical to an export and still contain a consequential change: an empty cell.
A concrete example
Your current export has Vendor set to North Loom. The update includes Vendor, but its first product-row value is empty. With matching-handle overwrite enabled, that blank deserves inspection. If the Vendor column is absent entirely, the comparison should not treat it as an empty value.
Shopify documents different behavior for included blanks and omitted optional columns. Required fields and related-column dependencies complicate this, so use its current reference for the final decision.
Review sequence
- Compare against an untouched, fresh export.
- Review each intended blank with the person responsible for product data.
- Check related columns before removing any column.
- Test a small update and verify the product in the store.
